Cheltenham Glass and Glazing were recently contacted by Montpellier resident Mr L, who wanted us to replace a roof pod (skylight) in his Gloucestershire home. The seals around the existing glazed unit had failed some time ago and the glass had become clouded.
This meant that the window at the Gloucestershire property was not allowing natural light into the room below.
Adam Worth, Director of Cheltenham Glass and Glazing explained why roof pods can look foggy or clouded, saying,
“Unfortunately, over time, the seals between the panes of glass in any double glazed unit can perish and fail, allowing moisture to get between the glass. This gets trapped, causing small beads of condensation to settle and reduce visibility through the window.”
“In some cases these seals can be replaced and the unit repaired, however in this case the degradation of the seals was so severe that repairing the unit was not an option”.
Our expert fitters were able to neatly remove the old skylight and after cleaning up the opening in the roof, fitted the made-to-measure roof pod in its place.
Meticulous attention was paid to the installation of replacement flashing to ensure that there was no means of moisture tracking through into the room below.
Before leaving the Montpellier property, the Cheltenham Glass and Glazing fitters gave the customer some helpful advice about preventative maintenance measures in order to preserve the life of the new roof pod.
Regular inspections of the seals and flashing, periodic wiping down of roof pod surfaces, clearing leaf debris and monitoring of the surrounding roof area will all help to ensure that small issues are caught before developing into more serious (and usually costly) problems.
