“Our village hall windows were in need of some TLC, there were cracked panes of glass and the putty was disintegrating. The fitters at Cheltenham Glass and Glazing have done a great job and the windows look as good as new”
Brookthorpe Village Hall
Another recent project undertaken by Cheltenham Glass and Glazing was the replacement of damaged panes of glass at Brookthorpe Village Hall, a former school building that is well used by the local community.
We were contacted by the village hall management committee who explained that a number of panes of glass were broken and that the glazing putty was cracked and falling off in places. Concerned that the condition of the windows could cause a security risk, the committee asked us to repair or replace, where necessary, the windows at the popular Gloucestershire venue.
Our expert fitters, trained in all aspects of traditional glazing techniques arrived at the rural Cheltenham property and set to work carefully removing the old putty and the damaged panes of glass. Once this stage of work was complete the window frames were cleaned and prepared for reglazing.
New panes of glass were cut to size and installed using new glazing putty, sealing the windows and meaning that the hall was secure and could be used comfortably once more.
Traditional putty glazing is a skilled craft that has been around for centuries. A soft, malleable compound usually made from linseed oil and whiting, is gently applied around the edges of a pane of glass to secure it within its frame.
Once it has cured, putty creates a durable weather-proof seal that should last for many years, bonding to both the glass and wooden or stone frame. Windows glazed with putty have a distinctive look that is especially valued in older properties, helping to maintain character and kerb appeal.
